The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Calvary Methodist Church Monday morning, June 29, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 40 in attendance. Calvary Methodist Church of Swainsboro provided the outstanding breakfast consisting of sausage biscuits, fresh cut up fruit, a 250th Birthday Cake for the United States of America, orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, apple juice and coffee. Shari Watt introduced the Director of Herrington Homestead, Nita Hardaway, who talked about the Home and how it provides boys and girls with a stable home life such as the Herrington's enjoyed. The boys and girls at Herrington Homestead have been assimilated into the schools, churches and community life in Emanuel County, and they are involved in sports, clubs, recreational and extracurricular activities. This farming community provides the boys and girls with the unique experience of watching crops develop and grow. As the boys and girls watch the farming process, they learn the value of a strong work ethic. Outdoor living teaches them to appreciate the value of our environment. Nita talked about the students plans for a trip to Disney World later in the year. If you would like to help with this trip, please send your donations to: Herrington Homestead, 8109 Hiway 297, Swainsboro, GA 30401.

To honor our 250th Anniversary, Compatriot Bill Carmichael, member of the Wiregrass Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, and a Veteran himself, attended dressed as his Patriot Ancestor Sheppard S. Lane and took his Brown Bess 75 cal. musket and his Pennsylvania/Kentucky 50 cal. flintlock rifle.
