Guiding your way through early adulthood

Being in your early 20s is one of the most memorable and fun parts of one’s life. Despite this, it can also be the most confusing. This is the time in which we are supposed to make life-altering decisions, start working towards our future, and getting ready for the rest of our lives. It can become easy to feel behind on life when it seems everyone else has their lives together. From social media posts about engagements, pregnancy announcements, and major accomplishments filling up your feed, to the constant pit-in-your-stomach feeling like you’re missing out on things. This can take a toll on one’s self worth and make them feel like they’re doing all the wrong things.

I know all of these things because I have been that person. I have asked myself the question, “what is it that I’m doing wrong?”, more times than I’d like to admit. It took a very long time for me to realize that everyone moves at their own pace, and it is your job to live your life as you please. We shouldn’t feel pressured to hit these milestones in life so quickly because others are doing so - we should applaud their accomplishments and go on doing what is best for ourselves. As the great Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Something that I always struggle to remember is the fact that I am on God’s timing. No matter how anxious I get worrying about my future, I sometimes fail to remember that His will shall be done, and I just need to let go and trust in Him. In the end, having faith and trusting in Him will get us farther than we could ever imagine. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Next time you’re questioning how far you’ve come, or whether you’ve accomplished enough this far in life, take a minute to remember how blessed we are to be here. The next opportunity could be right around the corner. My advice is to take time, sit back, soak it all in, and remember that all things are done in God’s timing, not ours.
