Getting along in a world that feels divided

Posted

It seems like people are becoming more divided than ever. We disagree about politics, religion, sports, social issues, and even the smallest things. Sometimes, those disagreements can turn into arguments that make us forget something simple: we are all people.

We don’t have to agree with everyone to get along with them. We don’t have to see the world the same way, have the same opinions or make the same choices. What we do need is respect.

Loving one another doesn’t mean approving of everything someone does. It means remembering that there is a person behind every opinion. Someone can believe something completely different from you and still be a good friend, a good neighbor or someone worth caring about.

Life is too short to spend all of our time arguing over who is right. There are people around us who are struggling, celebrating, grieving, growing and simply trying to make it through another day. We never really know what someone else is carrying.

Maybe we should spend a little less time trying to change everyone’s minds and a little more time trying to understand each other. Say hello to someone you normally wouldn’t talk to. Give someone the benefit of the doubt. Forgive a little faster. Be kind even when you disagree.

At the end of the day, we have far more in common than we sometimes realize. We all want to be loved. We all want to feel valued. We all experience happiness, heartbreak, disappointment and hope.

We don’t have to agree on everything to love each other. We just have to remember that being different doesn’t make us enemies.

The world could use a little less fighting and a lot more understanding. And sometimes, getting along starts with something as simple as choosing to be kind.
