Football, zen and the problems of the world

“Commentary” is a wonderful thing. It gives you license to express your opinions on subjects you know and care about, but the really great thing about commentary is that it also allows you to say whatever you want about subjects you don’t really know that much about as well. That, my friends, is what we are doing today. As we now watch 2025 drawing to a close, there are a lot of loose ends still hanging that need discussing like the war in Ukraine, climate change, interest rates, and everything that Democrats hate and Republicans like, but the biggest question facing us today is what in the wide world of sports happened to the Georgia Bulldogs last week? Even a deeper mystery of the universe is what is going on in the mind of Kirby Smart?

Now let’s get one or two things straight to begin with. I am and have been ever since I left Athens before the great flood flooded, a staunch Bulldog supporter. That’s a long time to carry on a love-hate-love relationship with anything. Next is my admission and acceptance of the fact that every so often, ancient history has recorded that Georgia Tech has fielded a decent football team. Finally, truth be told, I actually have had friends who were Techites. Most people don’t know it, but at the bottom of every UGA diploma, in very small letters, it says you are only allowed to have three Tech friends per lifetime. Anyway, with all that said, I am here to admit that last Friday’s match between the Dawgs and the Jackets was, in my humble opinion, a low spot in the history of this rivalry, and even worse, the” Grand Canyon” of low spots belonged to Georgia. I’m sorry, and I hate to admit it, but I feel better for saying it. I can’t figure it out, and I know there has got to be an answer somewhere.

Maybe Kirby was saving Bo Walker, Chauncey Bowens, Lawson Luckie, Oscar Delp, Elyiss Williams and others on the team for the SEC Conference Championship on Saturday. Maybe Mike Bobo was still under the effects of a tryptophan turkey-induced naptime. I don’t know what happened. Gunner Stockton was not having one of his “hot” games, but if you want to talk about sheer power and determination, that boy was sacrificing his body like somebody trying to commit suicide by running into 300-pound linemen. To be fair, Tech played a heck of a game, and once again, Georgia’s defense had to lead us out of the abyss. I guess it’s just a sign of advancing age, but it seems like it gets harder and harder to follow the Dawgs and turn on that game every week. It’s sorta the same feeling you used to get when you were called to the principal’s office or got a letter from your tax attorney. Being a loyal Dawg fan can be like that. You just don’t always know what to expect, but if you bleed red, you’ll be right there. It’s just simple allegiance.

Okay, so stop whining, and get ready. The SEC Championship game is at 4 p.m., Saturday, December 6, and all we need to say is GO DAWGS, WHIP BAMA!! We’ll handle all the other problems of the world next week.
