Family Connection preps for nutrition and literacy

Posted

Family Connection partnered with two great teachers at Swainsboro Elementary School last week to incorporate learning in the areas of nutrition and literacy. In Mr. Rhett Harper’s 4th grade agricultural education, students learned about beef and the many ways it is prepared. Tammy Allen, Family Connection Coordinator, assisted the students with the use of the Charlie Cart in preparing homemade pizzas using ground beef as a topping.

Another 4th grade class taught by Ms. Amy Holton asked Mr. Harper and Ms. Allen if they could bake a cake using a recipe found in a book the class just read called “Thunder Cake”. This was a delicious “made from scratch” cake that the students enjoyed making and eating that had the uncommon ingredient of tomato purée.

These hands-on experiences teach students skills they will use for life while enhancing their classroom learning.
