Emanuel Retired Educators meet at Emanuel County Institute

Posted

The Emanuel Retired Educators Association recently held its April meeting in the Emanuel County Institute Media Center. President Toney Golden welcomed members and called the meeting to order. ECI Principal Brooke Frye extended a warm welcome from the school and shared information about the school’s academic focus for the school year. She then introduced her administrative team: Assistant Principal Christy Henry and Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Adam Robertson. The group shared an informational video showcasing the school and its mission.

President Golden offered a devotion, and members enjoyed a delicious meal provided by the school nutrition program.

Angie Moralas, BSA Officer with Queensborough National Bank and Trust, provided a most informative program related to elder financial exploitation. She stated that last year, $28.3 billion in fraud was reported by individuals over 60 years of age, and that is estimated to be only a quarter of the fraud that was committed. She shared that there are two kinds of fraud against seniors, elder theft and elder scam. Following her presentation, members participated in a question-and-answer session. Many valuable tips and suggestions to protect members from fraud were provided.

As part of this year’s community projects, EREA members donated a variety of school supplies to ECI, and earlier in the day, doughnuts were provided for the school staff.

EREA wishes to thank the Emanuel County Institute administration and staff for the wonderful meal and the warm hospitality they extended. The next EREA meeting is set for Wednesday, May 20, at noon at the Fulford Community Learning Center. GREA Area 6 Director, Gwendolyn Yarbrough, will join members and install the 2026-27 slate of officers. The slate includes President: Teresa Bright, President-elect: Renae McNeely, Secretary: Huddie Culbreth, Treasurer: Bobbie Daughtry, and Parliamentarian: Toney Golden.

The GREA State Convention will be held May 5-7 at the Augusta Marriott. Emanuel Retired Educators Association will be recognized as a Unit of Distinction at the convention.
