Emanuel County Schools supports families of students with special needs through the Parent Mentor Partnership. This program connects home and school by providing parents with guidance, resources, and support.

With this partnership, families get help understanding the special education process, finding services, and talking with teachers and school staff. This support helps parents feel informed, confident, and involved in their children’s education.

Trena Houston is the Parent Mentor for Emanuel County Schools. She brings both experience and a strong commitment to helping students and their families. Before this role, Houston volunteered at Swainsboro Elementary School and worked for two years as a paraprofessional in a classroom for students with significant disabilities. Her hands-on experience with students and teachers has prepared her to guide families through the challenges and opportunities of special education.

“As students move through different grade levels and schools, their teachers and classrooms may change, but I want families to know that my support remains the same,” said Houston. “I’m here to listen, answer questions, and help connect them with the resources they need throughout their child’s educational journey.”

In her role, Houston helps families with many needs, including questions about student behavior. She connects parents with doctors, agencies, and community groups that offer extra services. Her knowledge of resources helps families find the support they need, especially when things feel overwhelming.

Houston also works closely with ECS teachers to find resources and support that fit each student’s classroom needs. By building these connections, the Parent Mentor Partnership encourages families and educators to work together and help create a supportive learning environment.

“The Parent Mentor Partnership plays a vital role in supporting our students and families,” said Demita Clark-Hubbard, Director of Student Services. “Navigating the special education process can sometimes feel overwhelming for families, and having someone who can provide guidance, connect them with valuable resources, and help them understand the process can make a tremendous difference. Ms. Houston is instrumental in building those connections, empowering parents, and ensuring families feel supported, informed, and confident as they navigate their child’s educational journey.”

Through the Parent Mentor Partnership, Emanuel County Schools demonstrates its ongoing commitment to supporting students with special needs and building strong relationships with families. The program gives parents a reliable source of support throughout their children’s education.
