Emanuel County Schools maintains strong financial safeguards

Recent news coverage has raised concerns about the financial health of some Georgia school districts. Emanuel County Schools wants to assure our community that we maintain strong financial safeguards and transparent practices.

The Georgia Department of Education recently released its “Blueprint for Reforms to School District Financial Safeguards.” Many of the recommendations outlined in that plan—such as strengthened financial training and oversight—have already been priorities in our district for at least the past two years.

The Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts conduct our audits annually and our Executive Director of Finance and School Superintendent review and sign all bank statements each month, paying close attention to remittances to TRS, SHBP, the Georgia Department of Revenue, and the IRS. The Emanuel County Board of Education also reviews detailed monthly financial reports as part of its regular oversight.

While recent audit findings have noted from prior years the need to maintain stronger controls over the recording, classification, and reporting of capital assets in accordance with policy and accounting standards, these items relate to software reviews, inventory procedures, and policy updates required to align with current accounting practices. We have not had a finding to indicate concerns with receivables, payables, or the district’s overall financial health.

Sustainability—is a focus that has guided our financial practices over the past five years and continues to ensure the responsible stewardship of public funds. Emanuel County Schools remains committed to maintaining the public’s trust through prudent financial management, continued staff training, and transparent reporting.
