Emanuel County Board of Education appoints Hattaway as new district superintendent

The Emanuel County Board of Education announced Scotty W. Hattaway as its new superintendent during a called board meeting held at 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19.
Hattaway was one of three finalists for the top educational post for the Emanuel County School District. Other finalists included Anthony J. Aikens and Dr. Denise B. Warnock. Georgia law dictates that finalists be announced 14 days before someone receives an official offer.

Educational Background
Hattaway is a 1988 graduate of Louisville High School. Furthering his education, he obtained a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) in agricultural education from The University of Georgia, graduating in 1993. He later attended Valdosta State University, where he obtained a Master of Education (MEd) degree in Educational Leadership and Administration, general, in 2004, and an EDS degree in Educational Leadership and Administration, general, in 2006.

Career Background
In 1993, after graduating UGA, Hattaway was hired as an agriculture instructor/FFA advisor by Pierce County High School. He served in this capacity for 15 years before transferring to Long County High School in 2008, assuming the role of assistant principal. In 2010, Hattaway was promoted to principal of Long County High School and served that capacity until 2015 when taking on a new role as director of support services for the Long County Schools system. In 2017, he became superintendent of Lanier County Schools, and, later, took on the role of transition director for the school district in 2019. After serving the capacity of transition director for Lanier County Schools for five months, Hattaway was hired by Floyd County Schools in May 2019, where he served two years as the district’s deputy superintendent of operations until his recent hire with Emanuel County Schools.

Hattaway is married and has two daughters. He will begin his duties as Emanuel County School District’s superintendent on Thursday, May 20, taking on the roles of his predecessor. Dr. Judy’s retirement will be effective June 1, 2021.
