East Georgia State College graduated their second group of participants in the EGSC Staff Leadership Development Program in July. The seven participants completed the year-long program and received certificates for their accomplishments.
The college began the Staff Leadership Development Program to help dedicated employees of EGSC develop their leadership skills. The participants of the program were selected based upon their potential to contribute in the future to the college’s attainment of its mission as demonstrated by the applicant’s past contributions to the mission of EGSC, their experience and educational record, their future plans for career advancement in higher education, their commitment to participate fully in the program, the support of their supervisor and the quality of their written application.
The program began in August 2019 and ran through July. Members of the second cohort attended meetings throughout the year to identify their leadership styles and develop their skills to become more effective leaders and communicators. The meetings were held in person until the COVID-19 pandemic. The group then utilized Zoom to hold their virtual meetings each month. Participants also had mentors from the senior staff of the college to help further their understanding of the college as a whole and identify how to best achieve their professional goals.
During the year, participants met monthly with EGSC President Dr. Bob Boehmer to discuss a variety of topics, including completing an organizational leadership assessment, discussing the traits of a leader and how to make ethical decisions, the meaning of integrity, budgeting for higher education, professional development opportunities, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and more. The group also met with EGSC Foundation Trustees to discuss their role in the college and community and how the leadership program participants can help further the mission and vision of the college through community involvement.
“This group of leaders represents the future of East Georgia State College, and it is a bright future. Each of these leaders is talented and highly skilled in their area of responsibility. However, their passion for the mission of the college is what I find most impressive. Each of them believes deeply in our students and understands the potential those students represent for dramatic improvement in our great region. Each of them is committed to assuring that those students have a high-quality college education, graduate and go on to serve our region. The future of our beloved college is in great hands,” said EGSC President Dr. Bob Boehmer.
Program participants were Georgia Beasley, Noah Kamsler, Megan Scruggs, Harley Strickland Smith, Joy Strickland, Michael Wernon, and Hannah Young. They were joined by mentors Dr. Sandra Sharman, Chuck Wimberly, Chief Mack Seckinger, Dr. Jimmy Wedincamp, and Pamela Adams.
