Members of the ECI FFA Chapter recently showcased their communication and marketing skills in the Agricultural Sales Career Development Event (CDE), earning top honors at the Area 4 competition in January before advancing to the state contest held February 7 in Perry, Georgia.

The Agricultural Sales CDE is designed to equip students with the foundational skills needed to pursue careers in the sales industry. Sales play a vital role in a market economy, particularly in agriculture, where both production inputs and agricultural products depend on effective marketing and strong client relationships. The event challenges students to apply real-world sales strategies in competitive scenarios.

At the area level, the ECI FFA Ag Sales Team captured 1st place overall, securing their spot at the state competition. The state contest tested students in multiple ways. Participants first completed a written exam to evaluate their understanding of sales principles, customer relations, and marketing strategies. In addition, each team prepared a product presentation and professional portfolio designed to market a specific product to a potential client based on information provided prior to the event.

During the sales presentation, judges acted as real customers. In some cases, the “customer” might decide not to purchase the product, adding an extra layer of realism to the experience. Competitors were required to establish rapport, ask probing questions, identify customer needs, and effectively demonstrate how their product would provide solutions. The goal was not simply to make a sale, but to ensure the customer’s needs were fully understood and met.

The top four teams at the state level advance to a team sales portion of the event, where collaboration and strategy play an even greater role.

The ECI FFA Ag Sales Team placed 6th overall in the state competition. Team members include Amelia Meadows, Lawson Frye, Clay Lawrence, and Davis Johnson.

Individually, Lawson Frye earned the distinction of High Individual in the state competition, achieving the highest overall score among all participants.

The Agricultural Sales CDE provides students with invaluable experience in communication, professionalism, and problem-solving—skills that extend far beyond agriculture and prepare them for success in a wide range of careers.
