Each year the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) sponsor two essay contests. The American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 and the Patriots of the American Revolution Essay Contest for students in grades 9 - 12. The Governor David Emanuel-Adam Brinson Chapter, NSDAR, promoted these essay contests to students in all schools in Emanuel County. The topic for the American History Essay was on the Second Continental Congress. The high school students selected a figure from the era of the American Revolution and discussed how he/she influenced the course of the American Revolution.

The following students submitted the best essay from their grade at the school-level of competition. The 8th grade winners were Brook Fleming – David Emanuel Academy (DEA); and Lillian Mason - Swainsboro Middle School (SMS). The 7th grade winners were Emily McRae (DEA); and Jackson Cavanah – Emanuel County Institute (ECI). The 6th grade winner was Sheppard Purcell (ECI). The 5th grade winners were Charlie McRae (DEA); and Jayley Hart - Swainsboro Elementary School (SES). The 9 -12 grade winners were Josie Grace Black (DEA); Matthew Trail (ECI).

Essays of the school winners were evaluated to determine a Chapter Winner as follows: Lillian Mason, 8th grade; Jackson Cavanah, 7th grade; Sheppard Purcell, 6th grade; Charlie McRae, 5th grade and Josie Grace Black, 9 – 12th grade. The four Chapter Winners received a Certificate and $25 check. These essays advanced to District-level competition.

“We are thankful for each student who took the time to learn more about our American History and write an essay” shared Lynn Torrance, DAR Member, who coordinated the local participation. “You are all to be commended.”
