Members of the Governor David Emanuel – Adam Brinson Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) joined historians, community members, and patriotic organizations for the National Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Event of the 247th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Brier Creek and Patriot Grave Marking in Screven County, Georgia.
The memorial ceremony honored the soldiers who fought and died during the Revolutionary War battle on March 3, 1779, when Patriot forces were surprised and defeated by British troops near the confluence of Brier Creek and the Savannah River. The battle resulted in heavy Patriot casualties and was one of the most significant engagements of the war in Georgia.
During the annual commemoration, participants gathered at the historic battlefield near Sylvania, Georgia for a program that included a presentation of the colors, patriotic remarks, and a ceremonial wreath laying.
Representatives from several lineage societies and historical groups took part in the event. Participants emphasized the importance of preserving the historic battlefield and remembering the sacrifices of the Patriots who fought for American independence.
The annual commemoration continues a long-standing tradition of honoring the men who fought at Brier Creek and educating new generations about the role the site played in America’s fight for independence.
