Community mourns three lives lost in tragic Highway 56 accident

The Emanuel County community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of three beloved residents following a tragic accident on Saturday night, May 23 - Nykeria Johnson, 18, Kencerio D. Walker, 18, and Kencerio’s father, James A. Walker, 65.

Nykeria and Kencerio are both members of the Swainsboro High School Class of 2026. James Walker, a former Swainsboro High School employee and current Emanuel Medical Center staff member, was remembered as a devoted father and a steady, joyful presence.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Highway 56 South, about a half mile south of Pine Hill Church Road, when a large tree suddenly fell across both lanes of the roadway, striking two vehicles. Investigators reported that the falling tree hit a black Jeep Cherokee and a blue Ford Taurus.

Deputies found the Ford Taurus on the south side of the tree in the northbound lane, facing south. The vehicle had sustained catastrophic damage. Emergency responders located the driver and two rear seat passengers inside.

The Jeep was discovered on the north side of the fallen tree. Investigators determined it had also been struck. The driver, an 18 year old male from Midville, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Burke County EMA to Piedmont Medical Center for treatment.

Family members shared that the victims were returning home from Augusta after celebrating the young couple’s graduation milestone.

Loved ones described Kencerio and Nykeria as bright, hopeful graduates with promising futures, and remembered James Walker as a dedicated father and family man whose kindness left a lasting impact.

“The Emanuel County School District community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two recent graduates and a former district employee. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with their families, friends, and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy,” said Emanuel County Schools Superintendent Dr. Denise Warnock. “The individuals we lost were students with bright futures ahead of them and a former colleague who always had a smile on his face and left a joyful impression on those he encountered. We ask our community to join us in keeping these families in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

“James Walker was a critical member of our environmental services team who took tremendous pride in his work, ensuring that every patient and visitor walked into a clean, safe environment. That pride and dedication helped set a standard of excellence reflected in EMC’s numerous cleanliness awards and recognitions. But if you thought that was the full measure of who James was, you would be wrong, very wrong,” said Emanuel Medical Center CEO Damien Scott. “James embodied something that cannot be captured in a job description. He believed that every single person has the power to improve the health of those around them with a smile and a warm greeting. His encouraging spirit and genuine love for people were felt by our staff, our patients, and every visitor who crossed his path. He did not just meet our values. He gave them life, and he helped shape who we are as a family. James leaves behind a legacy that words can hardly contain. But perhaps scripture says it best: ‘Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.’ 1 John 4:7”
