Capper speaks to Veterans at the Library

The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, August 17, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 38 in attendance.

The Beta Sigma Phi provided breakfast consisting of sausage biscuits with all the trimmings and assorted muffins. Shari Watt provided the orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, apple juice, and coffee.

Chair Tapley introduced Kaitlyn Capper who is in charge of the Genealogy Department in the Statesboro Regional Library and also assists the Franklin Memorial Library in their Genealogy Department. Capper talked about all the items that were available for research in the Genealogy Department and what has been going on in the area concerning America's 250 events.

Veterans at the Library had two new veterans attend, Christopher Andrew Carter and Gerald Hall. Carter served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the MALS 31 and was deployed during Desert Storm. He was stationed at Parris Island, SC, Camp Lejeune, NC and NAS Lemoore MCAS Beaufort. His highest rank was E-3. Hall served in the U.S. Army from August 5, 1981, until June 15, 1984. He was stationed at Fort McPherson, Atlanta and Germany. His highest rank was E-4.

Chair Johnny then talked about the upcoming 30-day, 30-gun drawing during the month of September. There will be a winner drawn for each day and it’s possible to win more than once. He also talked about the upcoming Veterans Wall that is being constructed at the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park later this year by November 7. You can obtain a form at the library for your veteran's information to be placed on the wall.

Veterans also heard good news about the newsletter being published by the Georgia Historical Society from their representative LaPortia Mosley about their first newsletter featuring the Veterans at the Library. They then heard from Veteran Terry Reynolds about the upcoming Wounded Warriors Retreat 15th Annual Sportsman's Banquet and Auction that is being held on October 8 at 5 p.m. at Beaver Creek Plantation.
