Bulldogs and Indians Scrimmage in Vidalia

The Bulldogs took the football field at Buck Cravey Field Friday with a very young team, made up mostly of freshman and sophomores, a few juniors and only 4 seniors.

The coaches and fans saw a lot of fight in the Dawg Friday night as the two varsity teams went toe to toe for three quarters ending in a 14-14 tie. The two jv teams closed out the game in the fourth quarter. Both jv teams moved the ball between the 20’s but neither could find the end zone with no score in the final quarter.

I’m proud of the effort but we played a ton of young players and they made young mistakes,” commented head coach Chris Kearson. Vidalia is a hard nosed, well coached team.”

No stats were recorded in the game but best guess has the Bulldogs easily at over 200 yards rushing the first 3 quarters.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and marched on a time consuming 65 yard drive. Tuff Boddiford found a wide gap in the Indian line from 4 yards out for a touchdown. Extra point was wide right with the Bulldogs up 6-0 late in the first quarter.

The Indians scored both of their touchdowns in the second quarter to lead 14-6.

Brian Steele scored the second touchdown for ECI from 3 yards out. Tyler Foreman called his own number for the successful two point try to tie the game at 14-14.

Neither team found the end zone in the third quarter with both defenses making plays to stop drives.

The Bulldogs will be back on the road this week for another scrimmage game. ECI will face Fitzgerald in the last pre-season game. The Hurricanes lost to Thompson in the class AA championship game last season 32-27. They are currently ranked at number two when the season begins, behind Thompson.

“We’ll need a good week of practice and clean up some errors to have success against a very good Fitzgerald team,” commented Kearson.

The Bulldogs are open the first weekend of the football season on August 18 and won’t play their first regular season game until August 25 when they play the Tigers in Metter.
