The Emanuel County School District is joining in a statewide celebration to acknowledge the work and dedication of local school board members. The week of March 13 to March 17, 2023, has been proclaimed School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. This weeklong celebration is to show the Emanuel County Board of Education members how much we value their service and dedication.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to one of the hardest working groups and educational advocates in the community. The Emanuel County School (ECS) System Board of Education (BOE) is elected by the community to represent the people of the community in the oversight and direction setting the business of our schools. We are blessed to have such a dedicated group of individuals who graciously sacrifice their time away from their families each month to fulfill their roles. The bulk of our stakeholders, in my opinion, do not fully comprehend the excellent work that the ECS BOE members accomplish," said Superintendent Hattaway. “Our BOE is a ‘model’ for other leadership groups. They work very collaboratively as a team. They continually exhibit unwavering support for our students and staff. Your BOE has a record of ensuring financial stability, has adopted a very specific set of Operating procedures to maintain meeting integrity, and has approved a very student/community-centered five-year Strategic Plan that will guide your school system toward success for all of our stakeholders. Thank your BOE members for your hard work for our students, staff, and community!”

District 1 – Mason Henry, Chair - 10th year
District 2 – Cherie Hooks – 1st year
District 3 – Del Brown – 6th year
District 4 – Tanya Lane – 4th year
District 5 – Johnny Parker, Vice-Chair- 8th year
District 6 – Sandra Swinney – 4th year
District 7 – John Allen Bailey – 6th year
As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system, and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board members advocate for the children in local public schools. They must study, evaluate, and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.
