‘Bluberry’ returns to his roots

One of the most meaningful things in life is bringing joy to others and getting back to your roots. For Darryl Handberry, he has done all of that and more within the last few years. Handberry’s family have been Emanuel County natives since the early 1900s. Growing up in New York, he traveled to Garfield often to stay with his grandparents on the Handberry Farm.

As he got older, he found that his favorite thing in life was making the people around him laugh. After driving a subway train for 25 years in New York City, he decided to retire and do what he truly loves: bring joy to others as a performative clown named Bluberry.

It all began with his work as a Shriner, where he was named “Imperial Deputy Director of Clowns” and won multiple clown competitions. This is where he found his love for entertaining children and taking part in charity work.

“I love children of all ages, I love to have fun,” stated Handberry. “If I can make a person smile once it is well worth it.”

Inspiration struck when Handberry decided to start his own business in Garfield named “You Think It’s A Game!” Entertainment LLC., in 2018. When asked what made him want to return to his roots in Garfield, Hansberry stated, “My mother retired in 1987 and moved home, and that was a big influence in wanting to return.”

He and his wife Rhonda Handberry now offer fully-stocked party entertainment such as clowns, waterslides, bounce houses, yard games, and more. They have business locations out of New York City; Albany, New York; Atlanta, Georgia; Garfield, Georgia; and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Handberry wants everyone to know, “There’s a clown near you!”
