Swainsboro High School is celebrating an outstanding national achievement by FCCLA member and Culinary Arts student Isabella Blanford, who recently earned third place in the nation at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference held in Washington, D.C., July 6–10.
The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is the national Career and Technical Student Organization for Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) education. At Swainsboro High School, FCCLA offers students pursuing Family and Consumer Sciences career pathways opportunities to develop leadership skills through competitive events, community service, and leadership development activities, thereby preparing them for future professional endeavors.
Blanford qualified for the National Leadership Conference following a strong performance at the Georgia FCCLA State Leadership Conference, where she ranked among the top 20 competitors statewide in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Events competition. Her achievement at the state level enabled her to represent both Swainsboro High School and Georgia FCCLA at the national level.
Competing in the Digital Stories for Change STAR Event, Blanford developed a powerful multimedia project exploring the influence of social media on today's teenagers, highlighting both its positive impacts and potential dangers. The event required competitors to create a compelling two- to five-minute digital story designed to inspire awareness and change.
For her project, Blanford composed an original poem addressing the effects of social media and adapted it into a digital presentation utilizing video editing software. She integrated narration, background music, visual effects, and selected imagery to convey her message. Additionally, she presented her work to a panel of judges, detailing her creative process, research, and the objectives of her project.
Blanford's hard work and dedication earned her an impressive third-place finish in the nation. She also received a Gold rating, the highest award presented in FCCLA STAR Events competition.
She attended the National Leadership Conference with her mother, Kristen Blanford, who is a teacher at Swainsboro High School. Their visit to Washington, D.C., coincided with the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States, providing an opportunity to participate in a significant national event while representing their school, community, and state.
"Watching Isabella's dedication, creativity, and passion come to life throughout this project has been incredibly rewarding," said FCCLA Adviser and Culinary Arts Instructor Mrs. Kelli Mendieta. "Earning third place in the nation is an extraordinary accomplishment and a testament to the countless hours of hard work she invested in her project. She represented Swainsboro High School, Tiger Nation, and Georgia FCCLA with excellence, and I could not be more proud of her."
Beyond her achievements in FCCLA, Blanford is a distinguished student at Swainsboro High School. She is an honor student, a member of the Beta Club, and holds an officer position in the Technology Student Association (TSA). Additionally, she participates in multiple sports, including flag football, basketball, and soccer. Her commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and extracurricular activities demonstrates the dedication and work ethic that contributed to her national success.
Blanford's national accomplishment reflects not only her talent and perseverance but also the opportunities available to students through Career and Technical Education and FCCLA. Her success serves as an inspiration to future FCCLA members and demonstrates the impact students can make when they combine creativity, leadership, and a passion for making a difference.
