Stella Akridge, age 67, of Bishop, died Sunday, May 7, 2023. Funeral service will be Wednesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at the Cedar Street Baptist Church in Metter. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be Thursday, May 11, at 1 p.m. at Pinecrest Memory Garden in Pelham.
Stella was born on September 5, 1955, in Albany, to Hal and Sarah Taylor Akridge. In 1973, she graduated from Ravenwood Academy in Meigs, GA. Stella received her first degree in journalism from Valdosta State College. Additionally, she earned a degree in sociology from Albany State University, graduating with the Suma Cum Laude honors. For the past twenty-three years, Stella resided in Metter. She was counselor at the Emanuel Detention Center in Twin City for numerous years. Stella was a positive influence on many detainees and focused on helping them find a better life and make better decisions. She truly cared for these men and had high expectations for them. Stella was an active and much-loved member of Cedar Street Baptist Church in Metter. Ms. Akridge is preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Ray Coursey.
Those left to cherish her memories are one sister, Charlotte Coursey; one nephew, Justin Jones (Amy); one niece, Catie McWhirter (Philip); four great-nieces and nephews, Sophie and Zach McWhirter and Langston and Eliza Jones; one aunt, Voncile Franklin (Ted); one uncle, David Taylor (Paula), extended family members to include Flando Hobbs, Johnnie Mae Atkinson and Cynthia Bryan; and the loving and caring members of Cedar Street Baptist Church.
