Saturday, May 1, started off a normal day. Swainsboro firefighters had just completed they daily apparatus checks when Engine 4 from headquarters was sent to Gumlog Road and West MLK Boulevard for a report of wires down. A large truck had snagged the wires and broken two power poles and pulled down several hundred feet of live wires. A small fire burning by the side of the road was quickly extinguished.
At 3:52 p.m., Engine 3 from Southside was dispatched to 201 Pine Tree Trail for a reported log truck fire. The diesel tractor was fully involved in flames. Firefighters used a 1 3/4“ attack line to knock the fire down. However, fuel and hydraulic oil continued to burn. F500 firefighting extinguishing agent was used to blanket and smother the fires.
While this was happening, a two-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 56 North by Harris Lane. At 3:56 p.m., headquarters responded and found a Ford Fusion fully involved in fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, and one person was transported to hospital with injuries.
