The Special Gift of Memory

Posted

The gift of memory brings warm thoughts of bygone years. Our loved ones who are no longer with us in the flesh are always with us in the spirit.

Although we are advanced in age, we can be instantly carried back to our youthful years through the gift of memory. Death can never separate us from our loved ones. If we didn’t have the gift of warm or special memories, we could lose our link to the people, places or things that we love and never want to forget. Thank God for instant recall through the gift of memory!

Our local paper, The Swainsboro Forest-Blade, in its obituary section, reminds us how incredibly short life is. We see the familiar faces that we knew as children, became friends with and went to school with but who are suddenly no longer with us through death.

Death comes full circle to us all. The Bible states we are all appointed to die once, but we wonder why an innocent child or a promising teenager is taken from us without warning so early. We are always concerned about our neighbors and friends who are bereaved over the loss of their loved ones but when death comes knocking at our own door, we feel its full impact and can really feel the hurt and deep, painful sorrow it brings to us all.

If God is the personification of love, which he is, then we must know we will never leave us or forsake us, even in the face of death. His wisdom is greater than our earthly knowledge, and He never makes a mistake. We must trust him, even though sometimes we feel lost and alone when an untimely death claims our loved ones. He will comfort the broken-heated in our time of sorrow. Then, we are left with only warm, sweet memories. Those are the special times around the long, dinner table with mom and dad who are no longer with us, and the laughter and tears we shared with them for most of our years.

In our youth, my sisters and I thought they weren’t very smart, but as the years rolled by, they became the sweetest and smartest people in the worlds. There were always the ups and downs that we experienced as children, but a strong bond of love always held us together as a family. We weathered the storm and became responsible adults.

After all these years, we wonder where the time went. But, through the special gift of memory, our thoughts and warm feelings of love can reconnect us to the people and places we will always hold dear to our hearts.
