The Power of Power

Posted

Twice last week our area got a bruising display of the power of nature. It’s not the first time we have been visited by tornadoes and certainly won’t be the last. But the power and destruction of the weather events we saw on two consecutive nights is something rarely witnessed around here. We are all generally aware of the basics of what to do and where to go,but when The Weather Channel gives you that 10 or 15 minute window to find safety, you all of a sudden think… kinda like when they give you the seat belt instructions right before take-off, “I probably should have paid a little more attention to what they said in case I need it later on. With hurricanes, at least you get a 24 hour warning. As we learned, a tornado can turn towards you and dodge and dart and jump over houses and tear up an awful lot and be gone in a minute. That’s what happened Wednesday night; we heard the low hum that turned into a growl that became a 15 second roar accompanied by a battle of bass drums and flapping shingles then….. quiet. Some places avoided any damage at all. Others, in varying degrees, did not. But now, less than a week later, you see more signs of restoration than destruction. Folks helping folks. That does not surprise us. It will take a little while and a little help to get it all straightened out. But it will get straightened out, and that says a lot about correcting and repairing and continuing. And that, is an inspiring display of the power of the human spirit.
