Thanks for the read, Danny Boy!

Saturday, September 4, recognized National Newspaper Carrier Day at a national level. Newspaper carriers have been around since, well… the invention of newspapers. Newspaper carriers start their workdays in the early morning hours and play a helping hand in many other ways when not on delivery routes. National Newspaper Carrier Day was established in honor of Barney Flaherty, the first newspaper carrier (or paperboy) hired in 1833 at the age of 10. Despite the advertisement for “steady men” job applicants, 10-year-old Flaherty inquired on the job listing and secured the job.

More than 180 years later, a vast number of carriers have worked as news employees and continue the legacy prompted by Flaherty. These early-morning risers, like longtime Forest-Blade employee Danny “Debo” Worthen, dedicate themselves to delivering the most up-to-date news features, hot from the press. So, as you enjoy today’s read, be sure to thank your local carrier!
