Swainsboro celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Posted

If you were in a plane, 500 feet above Swainsboro’s downtown streets on Monday, January 16, you may have looked out of your window and caught a glimpse of what seemed like beautiful, natural confetti. As the neutral hues sprinkled down Main Street in the colors of complexion, the scene from the ground was even more engaging and took hundreds of years in the making. The celebration of that day was to honor one iconic man and the ground-breaking life he lived for the justice of all. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a campaign of non-violent protests and civil disobedience in the struggle to end discrimination, including racial segregation in the US, in the 1950s and 1960s. He also pushed for social and economic improvements for African Americans while also fighting for legal equality. Every January 16, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday to honor his stunning ambition, legacy and love for the African American people and their equality. Although, we still have a ways to go, it is because of him and his dream that we are able to live freely as one today and move toward a future that embraces everyone for their character and heart. We thank you Martin Luther King, for fighting for legal equality.
