STC Adult Education celebrates National Adult Education & Family Literacy month

Posted

Southeastern Technical College, in partnership with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE), celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 19-23, 2022.

To recognize the accomplishments of adult education and family literacy students, Southeastern Technical College, Swainsboro Campus, sponsored various activities to celebrate including distributing books to students and their families, providing bookmarks to encourage reading, discussing data related to adult literacy in Georgia, and hosting a reading afternoon with the children of students.

Over 30 million Americans over the age of 25 – or one out of every ten U.S. citizens – do not have a high school diploma. In Georgia there are 1.1 million Georgians who did not complete high school. Southeastern Technical College is working to change that statistic by offering free adult education classes and high school equivalency testing.

Research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that job growth for individuals without a high school diploma or some college experience is about zero or even negative. By 2024, 48 percent of job openings will be middle-skill and 32 percent will be high-skill. This means that in less than 3 years, nearly 80 percent of all job openings will require more than a high school degree. Adults who participate in our program have the opportunity to explore career pathways and hone their skills so that they can advance their careers through postsecondary education or training.

STC’s Swainsboro Campus offers morning, afternoon, and evening classes which can be attended either in person or live via the internet. All classes and pretesting are free. If students meet certain qualifications, the high school equivalency testing is also free. We offer registration and orientation every Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Building 1, downstairs, room 1122. Please bring photo identification. If you have questions or wish to schedule registration at another time, please feel free to contact us. Our contact information is below.

“Adult education, along with family literacy programs, are focused on breaking the cycles of low literacy, low education, and poverty by serving adult students who need to improve literacy and math skills to obtain a high school equivalency, enter post-secondary education or training, and enter the workforce of the future”, commented Susan Cross Executive Director of the Adult Education at Southeastern technical College.
