SHS Seniors Apply to College

Swainsboro High School seniors participated in Georgia Apply to College (GAC) Day Tuesday, November 9. This initiative, sponsored by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, was created to give seniors the opportunity to apply to college, with a focus on providing assistance to first-generation college bound students as they navigate the application process as well as to increase the number of students accessing post-secondary education.

Harrison Jones applied to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at the event. He said, “Applying at school was convenient and easy; I’m glad we got this opportunity.”

Keyazia White agrees. “It was so much easier and understandable to apply at school. Plus, we had people to help us.” White applied to Southeastern Technical College.

Monica Pace, counselor, coordinated this effort at SHS and stated, “This gives many of our students who would not have otherwise considered college the opportunity to apply to college with the assistance of teachers, administrators, and recruiters. We were fortunate to have representatives from East Georgia State College, Southeastern Technical College, Georgia Southern University, and Paine College on hand.”

A representative from Georgia Student Finance Commission was also available to help students and parents with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Many colleges and universities waive application fees during the month of November for this event.

First held in 2008, over 200 schools in Georgia participate. In support of GAC, each year the governor issues a proclamation declaring November as Georgia Apply to College Month. For more information visit https://www.gafutures.org.
