Swainsboro High School celebrated Black History month with a powerful program Wednesday,
February 15. Guests were educated on the history of African American music and its influence
on many genres including gospel, jazz, and blues. Students from all grade levels showed their
talents through songs, reading, and dance. Caleb Long served as master of ceremonies,
Tamyshia Johnson, Nauseen Hall, and Tanyia Williams led an ensemble in the song, “Stand Up,”
Jayson Brown played instrumental selections on the saxophone, and Branasha Nwakudu sang an
a capella rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” In addition, Trinity Brinson, D’Andre Smith,
Quintus Williams, Bryson Tarver, and Jada Thompson provided readings and introductions.
Members the SHS Step Team (Hannah Howard, D’Andre Smith, Rentavious Brown, and Mariah
Jones) also performed. Principal Brandon Andrews provided closing remarks. A special
presentation was made in appreciation of school counselor Monica Y. Pace.
Guests for the program included retired and current educators, Emanuel County Schools central office staff, parents, 11 th and 12 th grade students, and many other community members. The
planning committee consists of SHS teachers Shayla Coleman and Linda Kelly, counselor Monica Y. Pace, and Intervention Specialist Alexandria Walden. Students Nauseen Hall and
Quintus Williams also served on the committee.
