SES students Spinach to Win It

Posted

During the week of October 17 to October 21, Family Connection partnered with the SES STEAM teacher, Susan Stephenson to teach the 4th and 5th grade classes about two fall food items - Spinach and Pumpkins. The vegetable of the month is Spinach, and the month-long theme is

"Spinach to Win It”, while pumpkins are the fruit of the month. Students learned planting, growing, and harvesting facts about these foods and got to bake up two tasty fall treats using them which were mini spinach quiches and mini pumpkin muffins. The Farm to School program supplies the schools with locally grown foods when possible and Family Connection assists in teaching the students ways of preparing the fruits and vegetables to expose them to new food choices. Healthy recipes and basic cooking skills are always a part of these classes. Family Connection volunteers who shared their expert knowledge throughout the week were: Pam Carr, Candy Powers, Joniece Handsom, Petite Garrett, and Sondra Fortner.
