Pop Boogie Park to reopen March 20

In celebration of the Twin City Centennial, Mayor Donaldson and the Centennial Committee have plans for an event each month throughout this year. This month’s celebration is the opening of Pop Boogie Park. The complex will open Saturday, March 20, with a dedication ceremony to begin at 2 p.m. Following the dedication, a meal of grilled chicken with all the trimmings will be served. A ball game has also been planned to celebrate the opening.
“It’s been a long road, and I’m tickled to report that Pop Boogie’s Softball Complex is showing some sign of life. The park is one of the projects that we have worked on for years,” said Twin City Centennial Committee Member Huddie Culbreth. It is located at the end of Old Statesboro Road on the “Summit” side of Twin City on land given by James L. Carmichael and family in 1997. This project is being funded by a grant from the Mill Creek Foundation and the City’s reserve funds.
Demolition and construction of the concession/restrooms took place in December 2020. City workers have completed replacing the bleachers and spreading dirt to level the grounds. Work is still ongoing to bring this recreation area to its full use.
“It has not been a walk in the park, believe me. However, I am excited that we have another outlet for community activities, and something that the community can be proud of,” said Mayor Matt Donaldson.
Family members of Mr. Thomas Brinson (Pop Boogie), individuals who played on the field, and the entire community are invited to come out and play a part in this rededication.
