County firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire on Highway 56 North around Ehrlich Farm Road on Wednesday, October 14, at 2:47 p.m. Additional calls were received for multiple fires burning beyond Underwood Loop toward mile marker 19.  Engine 6 from Swainsboro, Tanker 272 from Summertown, and a Georgia Forestry Quick Response Unit extinguished seven separate fires burning along the southbound side of the roadway.

It is believed the fires were caused by sparks from a piece of metal, possibly a chain, being dragged by a vehicle. The weather conditions of high temperature with low humidity were ideal for a wildland fire. Deputies from the sheriff’s office assisted with traffic control as the fire apparatus were blocking southbound lanes.
