Motion to revert council pay and benefits shot down after mayor breaks 3 – 3 tie

Swainsboro City Council and Mayor Greg Bennett met for their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 3, at 6 p.m. at Swainsboro City Hall. 

Minutes 

  • Minutes from the April 18 meeting were approved as presented.

Old Business:

  • John Parker motioned to revert benefits and pay schedule of council back to what it was prior to the April 4 meeting. This action was seconded by Bobbi Collins. Voting in favor of the motion were Parker, Collins and Quarterman. Voting opposed to the motion were Davis, Sconyers and Stafford. The resulting tie vote was broken by Mayor Bennett, who voted against Parker’s motion. The motion was defeated .

New Business:

  • Stanley Wimberly with Men Reaching Men Outreach addressed council on an upcoming event, a prayer vigil, set to take place at Swainsboro’s Boneyard pavilion on May 21.
  • Chris Morton with Clear Water addressed council with repair requests for the city’s street sweeper and other operational equipment needs for the city. He further advised that a quote from Big M in Wrightsville was currently being processed for repair work for the street sweeper. He also spoke on clean-up plans in place prior to this weekend’s Pine Tree Festival & Southeast Timber Expo event.
  • Council approved to advertise architectural services for city hall renovations. The vote was tied 3 – 3 by council members. Mayor Bennett again broke the tie to allow bids to be taken and considered for this project.
  • Council heard from a concerned citizen on city cleanup and maintenance needs in the Lake Luck area that have been requested but not fulfilled.
  • Swainsboro Police Department Chief Randy Ellison addressed council with the consideration of increasing part-time hourly pay for SPD employees. Currently, part time staff receive $12 per hour with no benefits included.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned.
