Delmus G. Mosley Sr. has received the honor of Mortician of the Year from the 1st District of the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association, Inc. The award celebrates his excellence in funeral service through Mosley Funeral Home of Swainsboro, which he owns and operates.

Mosley is an Emanuel County native. He was educated here, graduating from Emanuel County Elementary and High School in 1965. He entered the United States Air Force after that and served his country for four years during the Vietnam era. Mosley later attended college in Birmingham, Alabama and received a degree in elementary education and business. He studied to become an auto technician as well before eventually enrolling at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta. He received his funeral license and went back to become an embalmer.

“My father and my uncle started [Mosley Funeral Home] around 1958, and I took over the business after them. I became a licensed funeral director in 1977. I’m not sure why I was drawn to funeral service, but I enjoy it a lot. I get to serve the public through my profession,” Mosley said. “This is actually the second time I’ve won Mortician of the Year. I never aspired for any of this, for accolades or awards, but it’s a blessing. I just try to see the job get done and get done right.”

The 72-year-old has a long history of public service. He pastored for 40 years in the Methodist church as a traveling elder in South Africa and different places, helping innumerable churches along the way. He was also a part of Brother Mosley and the Gospel Voices, a traveling quartet, for some 25 years, blessing the masses with their talents.

“As a pastor, I love working with people. Funeral service is a good tie for that because you can console families and individuals during a loved one’s time of death,” Mosley commented.

He has been married to Evelyn Mosley for 11 years, and he is a proud father.

The community is invited to a banquet in his honor on Saturday, February 29, at 7 p.m. at Swainsboro Middle School. The dress will be semi-formal, and there is a limited amount of free tickets. To reserve your seat, call 237-8587.
