While honoring all of those that have served our country and continue to do so, make something

special to commemorate them this Independence Day, like the red, white and blue layered cake.

With three layers of patriotic colors that are coated with a creamy buttercream frosting and then

adorned with festive sprinkles, this moist and delicious cake is a beautiful addition to your July

4th celebration!

Ingredients:

1 (15-ounce) box white cake mix

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/3 cups water

1 cup sour cream

2 tbsp. vegetable oil

1 tbsp. vanilla extract

4 large egg whites

red and blue food coloring

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease three round cake pans and line with wax paper, then set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, flour, sugar and salt. Add water, sour cream, vegetable oil and vanilla extract and with an electric mixer, beat until combined. In a medium size bowl and with an electric mixer, beat egg whites for three minutes or until stiff peaks form. Fold egg whites into the batter. Divide batter evenly among three bowls and add drops of red and blue food coloring to two of them, then stir to combine. Pour batter into the pans and bake on the middle rack for around 27 minutes, or until a fork comes out clean in the center. Let cool for 20 minutes, then remove cake layers from pans and let cool completely.

Buttercream frosting:

1 cup vegetable shortening

4 tbsp. unsalted butter (room temp)

6 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 cup milk

festive red, white and blue sprinkles

In a large mixing bowl, beat together vegetable shortening and butter with an electric mixer. Slowly beat in powdered sugar, vanilla extract and milk until blended and creamy. Frost layers, top and sides of the cake. Decorate with festive sprinkles.
