Korwin named 2022 Teacher of the Year for Emanuel County Schools District

The Emanuel County Board of Education convened Tuesday, October 19, in the cafeteria of Swainsboro Middle School for their regular monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairman Mason Henry.

The cafeteria of Swainsboro Middle School served as the host spot for Emanuel County Board of Education’s regular monthly meeting held last Tuesday, October 19. The 5:30 p.m. meeting was called to order by Chairman Mason Henry with all board members present. Johnny Parker delivered the night’s invocation and John Allen Bailey led in the pledge of allegiance. The night’s agenda was then reviewed and approved by board members as presented.

Consent Agenda

Discussion items listed on the consent agenda included financial reports, fundraisers and minutes from the September 14 regular meeting and the September 30 called meeting. Superintendent comments were also heard and were as follows:

•Dr. Denise Warnock, Emanuel County School’s assistant superintendent, recognized the 2022 Teachers of the Year for Swainsboro and Twin City Schools. Teachers recognized for this prestigious honor were Jennifer Best, Twin City Elementary; Joey Korwin, Emanuel County Institute; Keri Claxton, Swainsboro Primary School; Coach Cam Holloway, Swainsboro Elementary School; Michelle Fondren, Swainsboro Middle School; Charlean Love, Swainsboro High School. ECI Teacher of the Year Korwin was named the 2022 Emanuel County Schools Teacher of the Year.

•Georgia Accrediting Commission School Quality recognition also took place and was led by Dr. Warnock who recognized all school principals at TCE, ECI, SPS, SES, SMS, SHS as well as Pre-K.

•TCE Beta National School of Merit Recognition followed.

•Lastly, a SMS renovation update was provided that detailed only 3.25 percent of punch list items are remaining to be completed, most being only cosmetic issues.

Following discussion of the consent agenda, the board unanimously approved all business items as presented before entering into executive session. Upon re-entering normal session, the following was announced:

•Board members approved the classified employments of Sallie Jane Claxton, substitute teacher; Melissa Fulmer, SFS assistant; Donna Graham, bus driver; and Roger McKenzie, HVAC.

•The board approved the resignations of certified employees LeAnn Snellgrove, counselor; and Amy Deal and Candice Hadden, teachers.

•Board members approved the resignations of classified employees Rebecca Mills, payroll specialist; and Lester Underwood, bus driver.

•The board approved the retirement of classified employee Karen Morris, tech specialist.
