Hometown Public Servants: Emanuel County 9-1-1

Posted

In honor of National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, we highlight Emanuel County 9-1-1 as our Hometown Public Servants.

Each year during the second week of April, the efforts of telecommunications personnel in public safety are recognized nationally. This week, we celebrate, thank, and raise awareness to those who dedicate their lives to serving the public in times when emergencies strike. The dispatchers at 9-1-1 are your lifeline in an emergency.

**Did you know: 35,000 calls were received by Emanuel County 911 during the year 2020?

“We are the community’s  first line of communication in the time of an emergency.  We strive to deliver the best service possible from the information we receive. We have a great group of dispatchers employed with the county.  The job itself can be stressful and demanding.  Although this is the case most days, our dispatchers still manage to provide quality service to the citizens of Emanuel County.  I want to take the time to thank them for their service and let them know how much they are appreciated,” stated Emanuel County 9-1-1 Director Martha Culbreth.

**Fun fact: Emanuel County 9-1-1 was established October 31, 1994. Directors since its establishment include Ken Warnock, 1994-1995; Steve Carter, 1995-2014; and Martha Culbreth, 2014-current.

Operations of 9-1-1 services
9-1-1 should be called upon for police, fire and medical emergencies only. Non-emergency calls should be directed to non-emergency phone numbers.
Details are critical. It is important to stay on the line with a 9-1-1 operator and answer all questions asked. Be sure to provide an accurate location. If you do not know the exact address, provide the operator with any details that you can. Look for landmarks, cross streets, signs, and buildings. First responders need an accurate location to respond as fast as possible.

When speaking to an operator, try to stay calm and speak clearly.
Do not hang up when calling 9-1-1. If you called by mistake, let the operator know.
Do not call 9-1-1 for jokes or prank calls.
