Herrington Homestead’s Annual Fishing Derby welcomed 35 youth anglers accompanied by angling partners to Emanuel County over the recent weekend for some outdoor fishing fun. On Saturday, April 30, derby participants traveled Highway 297 to Nunez to test their luck at wetting some hooks at the homestead’s campus pond. Registration began at 7:30 a.m. and weigh-in followed at 11:30 a.m. After a morning of fishing around the pond dam, derby participants, both young and young at heart, enjoyed fellowship over a grilled hot dog lunch prepared by homestead employees and volunteers.

In addition to each youth participant receiving a new fishing pole, awards for longest, heaviest and most caught fish were awarded. Winners of the 2022 Herrington Homestead Annual Fishing Derby are Trevon Glover, longest fish; Raheem Tarver, heaviest fish; and Lori Grace Moore, most fish.

More about Herrington Homestead

Herrington Homestead was established in 1996 and operates as one of five Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home campuses within the state of Georgia. The Emanuel County campus began with one cottage and has since grown to house three cottages, one for girls, another for boys 13-years-old and younger and the other for boys 14-years-old and older. Today, Herrington Homestead serves as home to 11 residents.

The purpose of the youth home campuses is to help secure the futures of homestead residents by providing a warm, caring and secure place for children in need of out of home placement. The Homestead, once the farm and home of the Herrington family, provides boys and girls with a stable home life such as the Herrington’s enjoyed. Boys and girls at Herrington Homestead are provided with the unique experience of local farming and learn the value of strong work ethic and outdoor living.

Georgia Sheriff’s Herrington Homestead is currently looking to fill three full-time house parent positions. Interested applicants must be at least 23 years of age and must pass a background check to qualify for employment.
