Mr. Gene Fields, 77, of Swainsboro, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at AU Medical Center in Augusta following a brief illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, at First Baptist Church of Swainsboro with Dr. Robert Blankenship and Rev. Louis Pearce officiating. Interment followed in Eastbrook Cemetery & Mausoleum. The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at First Baptist Church of Swainsboro.

Pallbearers were B. J. Claxton, Josh Claxton, Jeremy Claxton, Eddie Mack Claxton, Chris Womack, and David Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were The Gideons Swainsboro Camp, First Baptist Church of Swainsboro Deacons, Jimmy Flanders Sunday School Class, and Terwilligers Tire & AG Staff.

Mr. Fields was born August 6, 1944, in Santa Claus, to Lonnie Fields and Birty Atkinson Fields. He enjoyed fishing, wood working, and sharing the gospel. Mr. Fields loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a speaker and worked with the card program of The Gideons International. Mr. Fields retired from Terwilliger Tire & AG after 22 years. He served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Swainsboro, where he was a member for 17 years. Mr. Fields is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Doyle Fields and Elton Fields; sisters, Louise Meyers, Esther Trammell, and Maude Strange; and son-in-law, David Bertoch.

Mr. Fields is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patsy Claxton Fields of Swainsboro; favorite daughters, Karen Curl (Anthony), Lisa Bertoch, and Jennifer Fields; beloved grandchildren, Brandon Fields (Amy) and Madison Bray (Ian); great-grandson, Eason David Fields; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Gideons International or First Baptist Church of Swainsboro Missions.

Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
