Fred Lamon Gillis, Sr., 82, died Saturday, May 1, 2021. Visitation was held at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen on Monday, May 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service was held at the Millen City Cemetery on Tuesday, May 4, at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers were Zach Watson, Elijah Watson, Darrell Williams, Bronson Bragdon, Colton Bragdon, Josh Williams, Austin Proctor, Brandon Claxton, Lanier Parham, Dock Claxton, and Donald Avery. Honorary pallbearers were members of the BOCH Sunday School Class, Dale Wiggins, Gene Wiggins, H. G. Wiggins, Tommy Heath, and retired and active law enforcement officers.
Mr. Gillis was born and raised in Emanuel County, where he went to school and played football for Emanuel County Institute. He lived most of his adult life in Jenkins County. Mr. Gillis was a police officer, police chief, Special Agent for the Georgia Department of Revenue, and Special Agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, from which he retired in 1992. In retirement, he did private investigation work with his brother, Franklin Gillis, and raised cattle on his farm in Millen. He was a member of Millen Baptist Church. Mr. Gillis is preceded in death by his parents, Fred B. and Lurline Kitchens Gillis; and his brother, Franklin Gillis.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Gillis; daughter, Pam Gillis Gilbertz (Dave); son, Freddy Gillis; granddaughter, Ceilidh Watson; grandsons, Zach Watson (Nabrin Noor) and Elijah Watson; great-granddaughter, Poinciana Noor-Watson; sister, Joyce Gillis Williams (Johnny); brother, Charles Gillis (Kathy); and sister-in-law, Johnnie Wilson Gillis.
