The 70-year-old resident of a home was transported to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia by EMS after escaping her burning house.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, Emanuel County firefighters from Nunez, Oak Park, Stillmore, and Swainsboro, along with EMS and sheriff’s deputies, were dispatched to 3858 Harrington Street in Oak Park for a structure fire.

Heavy smoke and fire conditions greeted Oak Park volunteers as the fire was directly behind city hall and the fire station. The female resident was treated for smoke inhalation by first responders until the arrival of EMS. Heavy fire conditions ravaged the interior of the one-story building for over an hour before being brought under control.

The cause of the blaze is unknown.
