Fire of unknown origin caused major damage to the home at 53 Joe Bynes Road. Firefighters from Swainsboro, Summertown and Canoochee were dispatched to the scene at 11:55 AM on Monday August 15th. Heavy smoke and fire was showing from the 1400 sq. Ft. one story wood frame dwelling when Engine 200 from Swainsboro arrived. The fire was burning through the wall on one side of the structure and had extended into the metal roof covered attic. A part of the roof had sagged, and fire was showing along the ridge line. Firefighters mounted ground ladders and cut the metal roof to ventilate the heat and fire from the attic. An attack line was stretched into the structure and firefighters battled not only the fire but weather temperatures in the 90’s. With no water lines in the area, a tanker shuttle of water was conducted by Canoochee & Summertown firefighters. The fire was declared under control after a two-hour battle with units conducting overhaul operations for three hours. EMS stood by during the blaze, however no one was injured.
