The Emanuel Retired Educators Association held its September meeting in the Swainsboro High School Media Center on Wednesday September 21, 2022, at noon. President Jean Schwabe called the meeting to order and recognized past president Bobbie Daughtry and thanked her for doing such a great job last year as president and leading the charge in organizing EREA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration last May. She also thanked members who participated in the Forest Blade’s Golden Years Tabloid, as well as Elease Turner for agreeing to serve as the EREA photographer this year. Swainsboro High School Assistant Principal Lindsey Sconyers provided a welcome from the school and shared a special message from Swainsboro High Principal Brandon Andrews. Mr. Andrews expressed his gratitude for all retired educators and said Swainsboro High School’s doors are always open. He encouraged members to visit at any time.

The tables in the Media Center were decorated with beautiful fall decorations. Syvetta Young provided an invocation, and members enjoyed a delicious meal prepared and served by students from SHS Future Farmers of America, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and the Culinary Arts Department.

President Schwabe then introduced Superintendent of Emanuel County Schools, Scotty Hattaway, who centered his presentation on the students of Emanuel County and the many opportunities made available to them. His challenge to the teachers and staff is to approach each day with the following mindset toward students, “Learn ‘Em, Love ‘Em, and Lead ‘Em”. He then shared a host of student and teacher achievements from across the school district.

Following the presentation, Lynn Torrance recognized four new EREA members – Toney Golden, Theresa Bright, Tim and Cheryl Goodman. She presented each with a pen from GREA President Henrietta Gray.

President Schwabe reviewed her goals for the year which included supporting the GREA President’s March of Dimes project, strengthening EREA’s partnership with The Sunshine House Children’s Advocacy Center, awarding an EREA Scholarship to local students who plan to become teachers, and supporting Emanuel County Schools through volunteer service to classrooms.

EREA wishes to thank Swainsboro High staff and students for the warm hospitality they extended. The next EREA meeting is set for Wednesday, October 19, at Emanuel County Institute at noon. East Georgia State College President Dr. David Schecter will share his vision and goals for the college.
