Emanuel County Schools’ Nutrition Department brings smiles across the county

As COVID-19 unfolds throughout the United States, Emanuel County Schools has taken precautionary measures to prevent the spread of this virus from happening within our county by announcing school closures effective Tuesday, March 17.

In doing so, parents and students have been instructed to continue schoolwork online or school packets provided by staff to students.

The schools covered the safety and education values of local children and took it one step further by providing meals to students of the county as well.

Monday through Friday, Emanuel County Schools’ Nutrition Department offers meal drop sites via bus and vans at select locations throughout Emanuel County to be sure each child has food to replenish themselves each and every day.

When speaking to local children at a recent meal drop site, the kids stated that the provided meals are good, while others even ventured far enough to say that these provided meals “make me smile.” Some of their favorite meals thus far? Chicken sandwiches and barbecue!

Parents of these children reported the meal drop sites offered by the nutrition department have been a tremendous help and their children really enjoy the provided meals.

When speaking to a school nutrition employee, she stated, “We love to feed children and are hoping to feed as many as we can. The numbers [of children fed] continue to grow. As of right now, we are averaging 500 to 550 meals served to children county-wide.”
