Emanuel County 4-H’ers Aim to Educate Local Producers in Agricultural Technology

Posted

Emanuel County 4-H’ers Clay Lawrence, Spencer Lawrence, Yasmin Rios, and Tate Torpy attended a 2-day conference receiving hands-on training in agricultural technology with UGA specialists and county agents on the University of Georgia Tifton Campus. They attended the training with Emanuel County Extension Agents Savannah Tanner and Jakyn Tyson and returned home equipped with knowledge to educate others on what they learned. The youth-adult team is part of the Tech Changemakers initiative of Georgia 4-H.

Tech Changemakers is a national grant program empowering youth to teach adults about technology related topics. At the training, youth were led in various activities covering agriculture related technology lessons and were also trained on how to present to and teach adult audiences. Topics covered included applications and use of drone technology, irrigation scheduling applications, pest and weed identification applications, sprayer calibration, precision soil sampling applications, and guidance aids.

Through the grant program, Emanuel County Extension will receive the different on-farm technology and equipment used by the students at the training. Along with their adult advisors, the youth will now begin working with local agricultural producers and other adult audiences to demonstrate not only how they work but will also explain how they can be incorporated into use on the farm.
