EGSC receives grant for Mobile Biology Lab

Posted

East Georgia State College recently received a grant from the Mill Creek Foundation to purchase and establish a mobile biology lab. The mobile lab will be used to teach college biology courses at high schools for dually enrolled high school students. The project will enhance the educational opportunities for students from local schools and prepare them to be successful in college.

EGSC’s Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to take college classes and earn both high school and college credits for the same course. As part of the program at EGSC, high school students can either attend regular college classes on one of the three EGSC campuses, attend fully online classes, or attend college classes taught on high school campuses by EGSC faculty. The classes taught on high school campuses include English composition, Political Science, Psychology, and mathematics.

The new mobile biology lab will give EGSC the equipment and non-perishable items to teach biology classes at local high schools. Equipment and supplies include microscopes, hot plate stirrers, electronic balances, glassware, prepared microscope slides, and meter sticks.

"Having equipment and supplies easily accessible in our mobile biology lab will expand our offerings to local high schools,” said Dr. John Cadle, Swainsboro Campus Coordinator. “Scheduling lab courses for dual enrollment students on the EGSC campus has always presented challenges, but many of these will be easily overcome by our ability to teach these courses directly in the high school setting. Students benefit by earning college credit. It's a win-win."

The mobile lab will be set up this Fall and will be available in Spring 2022.

“The grant provided by the Mill Creek Foundation has enabled East Georgia State College the funds to purchase equipment enabling dual enrolled students a head start on their college career. Having an on-site class will enable more students access to the dual enrollment program. Students will complete the course at their own high school so no travel will be necessary. We look forward to many years of using the equipment at local high schools,” said Professor Darlene Dickens.

EGSC students, faculty and staff are grateful for the support of the Mill Creek Foundation. EGSC appreciates this grant that will provide opportunities for students in our area.
