East Georgia State College was recently recognized as a Tree Campus USA for 2019. This designation from the Arbor Day Foundation is awarded to universities and colleges across the United States for promoting healthy trees and student engagement on campus.
This is the third time that EGSC has been designated as a Tree Campus USA. To obtain this distinction, the college met the five core standards for an effective campus forest management, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
"I would like to thank all the members of the Campus Tree Advisory Committee on their commitment and dedication to the Tree Campus USA,” said Dr. David Chevalier, the interim Dean of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at EGSC. “This designation is evidence of the commitment of EGSC to promote the health of trees and environmental awareness on campus."
Earlier this year, the Arbor Day Foundation announced a name change of the Tree Campus USA program, which will be called Tree Campus Higher Education in 2020 and beyond. This change unifies the Tree Campus family of recognition programs, which now includes Tree Campus K–12 and Tree Campus Healthcare – new programs built on the legacy that began with Tree Campus Higher Education.
