ECHS concerned about John C Coleman Hotel

Posted

The August 21 County Commissioners Meeting will have on its agenda the John C. Coleman Hotel building, to discuss its fate. Many people want to see it restored; some want to tear it down. It is one of the last landmarks in our County. When it was built in the 1930s it was the only place to stop between Augusta, Georgia and the Florida state line. Many of the “Big Bands” stayed there while on bus tours headed to Miami along US Highway 1, the main road south at that time. The band members played for dances in town to pay for their rooms. A lot of “firsts” were incorporated into that building. We realize there is a lot to do to restore it for present-day usage, but isn’t that possible? Please plan to attend and voice your opinion. The meeting will be in the Commissioners’ room in the Hotel building, starting at 6 p.m.

Thank you, the Emanuel County Historic Society.
