East Georgia State College’s (EGSC) Cross Country Team added its first member to the roster. Allie Whitaker from Vidalia, Georgia, is the first person to commit to EGSC’s newly formed cross-country team. Beginning this semester EGSC is adding cross country and tennis to their athletics program which already features softball, baseball, and men and women’s basketball.

Whitaker, who was a dual enrollment student at EGSC, recently graduated from Vidalia High School. She is the daughter of Jamie and Lagena Whitaker. At her high school she was involved in the National Honor Society, BETA Club, Student Government Association, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was a member of the soccer team, cheerleading squad, track team, and the cross-country team. Whitaker recently had knee surgery, which slowed her running down, but she said she is ready to get back to the sport she loves most. “The entire time I was recovering from knee surgery I was just thinking about running again. Everyone at school always saw me running. The softball girls would see me during their practice, my friends would see me, everyone saw me running,” said Whitaker. “When the opportunity to run at East Georgia came up, I decided I wanted to do it. I wanted to get back to what I love doing.” The EGSC Cross Country and Tennis Teams will be hosting tryouts August 16 and 17 in Swainsboro. Tryouts will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. August 16, and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on August 17. Any current EGSC student interested in trying out can contact Assistant Athletic Director Denise Daniels for more information at dmdaniels@ega.edu or 478-289-2385.
