Jane Grier Durden of the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club was recently selected Kiwanian of the Year by former President Petite Garrett. This award is given annually to the one member who exemplifies the true characteristics of a Kiwanian, who participates in every project possible, and who positively supports the club’s leadership.

Durden was born and reared in Swainsboro and is the wife of the late Homer “Chip” Durden III.  Upon graduation from Swainsboro High School, she attended Georgia Southern University, where she obtained a BSED and a MED. She taught in the Emanuel County School System for thirty years, retiring in 2003.

Durden joined the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club in July of 2012, and was sponsored by her husband, who served as former Georgia district state governor and club president. Always with a desire to give back to her community, Durden is active in the club’s many projects, has served as club president, and currently serves on the board of directors. Because of Durden’s efforts, the club has technologically progressed by now “Zooming” its meetings so those members who cannot attend can watch meetings and remain in touch with fellow members.

Because of her dedication to the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club, Durden has also been honored with the Ruby K Award. The Ruby K recognizes Kiwanis members who bring in at least five new members to Kiwanis.

Kiwanis International gives distinguished awards to individual Kiwanians and clubs that meet established criteria that demonstrate special dedication to service, membership strength, and Kiwanis education.  Durden was recognized at the mid-year training conference as a Distinguished Kiwanian. Durden has also received the coveted Governor’s Leadership Medallion, a special recognition for Kiwanians within the Georgia district who have exemplified outstanding leadership skills by strengthening their club, division, and district by furthering the mission of Kiwanis International.

Durden was of immense help to her club and especially to the president during this entire year. The Swainsboro Kiwanis Club is the club that answers the call and supports the community, one child at a time, and remains strong. Having members like Durden, the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club has been able to continue its mission.
