Dr. Upchurch to participate in Missouri Teachers’ Academy

Dr. Tommy Upchurch, the Coordinator of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences for East Georgia State College-Statesboro and Coordinator of the History Department at East Georgia State College, will participate in the Missouri Teachers’ Academy in June. Hosted by the Missouri Humanities Council, this year’s theme is “Contested Elections, Electoral Calamities, and Controversial Changes in Presidential Power.” Dr. Upchurch will present a video lecture on the Presidential Election of 1876 and the Compromise of 1877 and lead a question & answer session on the topic for Missouri educators thereafter.
Dr. Upchurch earned his Ph. D. in History from Mississippi State University in 2001. His most notable book publications include: Legislating Racism: The Billion Dollar Congress and the Birth of Jim Crow (2004), Race Relations in the United States, 1960-1980 (2006), Historical Dictionary of the Gilded Age (2008), Christian Nation? The United States in Popular Perception and Historical Reality (2010), Abolition Movement (2011), and Genesis: The Explanation--What Really Happened "In the Beginning (2016). He and EGSC Director of Nursing Dr. Linda Upchurch have been married for 24 years and have three children and three grandchildren.
